False Nettle (Boehmeria cylindrical) lacks the stinging hairs of its nettle cousins. It Prefers medium-wet and semi-shady sites. Stringy heads of tiny yellow-green flowers form between leaf stems in summer. Moths and butterflies are attracted to this modest plant. It serves as a host plant for the larvae of several butterflies including the Red Admiral, Milbert's Tortoiseshell, Eastern Comma, and Question Mark butterflies. The larvae of the Flowing-line Bomolocha moth also use it as a host.

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Sprinkle the seeds on top of the soil. They are so small that a normal layer of soil will often keep them from germinating. They love moist soil so keep the soil moist. Sometimes the seed will take up to three months to germinate. They grow slow as fresh seedlings but once they get to an inch or two, they begin to grow faster.
