Mexican Sunflowers (Tithonia rotundifolia) flowers are attractive to a wide variety of bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, and can be used as cut flowers. Deadheading spent flowers will prolong blooming and done correctly, Mexican Sunflowers can bloom from June to frost. A lovely addition to any meadow or garden.

Tithonia grows best in full sun in poor to average, well-drained soil. Avoid planting in rich soil or heavy fertilization that with promote excess foliage and weak stems. Pinch back plants to encourage bushier growth.

Sow the seeds outdoors two weeks after the last frost. In short summer areas, zone 4 and colder, start the seeds indoors six weeks before the last frost to ensure the plants have time to mature and bloom before fall. Do not cover the seed but tightly press into the soil. Keep seeds slightly moist until germination. Space 24" to 36" apart. Plant in full sun.

Be sure to chop Mexican Sunflowers up for your mulch pile when it dies back in a frost. It is known as a “green fertilizer” and will add nutrients to your soil.
